BORGO PORTEO in COMEDIA 2021 (open air – 2nd edition)
professional training construction sites & shows on commedia dell’arte and puppetry (open air) Padua – Borgo Portello – 1/25 July 2021 – with the patronage of the Veneto Region, the Province, the Municipality of Padua and the Voluntary Service Center of Padua. In collaboration with the District Council 1 – Historic Center of Padua, the City of Hope Foundation, and OIC ONLUS Residential Center Nazareth, the Vittorio Zonca Venetian Rowing School. The project foresees, for this second edition, the organization and holding of three workshops / seminars in the period from 1 to 18 July 2021, and various shows and seminars from 1 to 25 July, in the Borgo Portello district, outdoors, described below:

WORKSHOP FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THEATER MASKS IN CARDBOARD

… a full-immersion weekend in a path led by a very special artist and set designer… The course is aimed at anyone who wants to experience a first approach to the construction of a cardboard mask. By experimenting and discovering the great potential of this poor material but extremely rich in potential, its extreme flexibility in being able to take any shape .. Everyone will create a mask starting from a subject or a personal basic idea. Tools and materials will be provided and placed at the service of the participants (paper and cardboard, hot gun, glues, etc …) The cardboard mask made and finished will ultimately be the property of the participating students. The course has a registration fee and places available are limited, however it is possible to follow the training sites remotely, through webinars on a dedicated platform. … a full-immersion weekend in a path led by a talented mask maker and theatrical teacher on leather processing techniques and the making of the masks of the Commedia dell’Arte. An opportunity for training, knowledge and development of their manual skills, which will give participants the opportunity to produce a product of great artistic value, choosing to work on their own wooden matrix or to choose a model from the Zorba Officine Creative catalog , to create a work tool, if actors, or a theatrical object if craftsmen. The leather mask made, finished and wearable will eventually be the property of the students / participants. The course has a registration fee and places available are limited, however it is possible to follow the training sites remotely, through webinars on a dedicated platform. … a full-immersion weekend in a path led by a multifaceted artist, sculptress and theatrical artist, designed for all those who want to create a puppet (for a show, for fun, for their children or just out of curiosity). The foil foam technique gives the possibility to create characters easily and within everyone’s reach. The paper patterns for the creation of many characters will be provided and the ways of creating and making foam rubber puppets will be explained, to discover that it is the choice of details and details that gives uniqueness and life to the spirit that is hidden in the foam! The puppet / muppet made will eventually be owned by the students / participants. The course has a registration fee and places available are limited, however it is possible to follow the training sites remotely, through webinars on a dedicated platform. conducted by Alfredo de Venuto – Artaud laboratory c.t.r. – assistance to the acrobatic movement Sara Celeghin. The circus has established two distinct types of clowns: the White, noble and poetic, and the Red, clumsy and childish. The common image of the clown is that of the circus man with a round red nose. But this is the Auguste. We can understand that of “clown” as a generic concept that groups a broad spectrum of comic figures. The non-action of the clown develops around laughter, body technique, word play and sadness. Laughter instigator, he trips over his own feet, stammers, says nonsense or doesn’t speak at all, but then proves brilliant at playing with words. Despite being an adult, he behaves like a child, reminding us that we too were children and had to learn to walk and talk. It shows how you can fail in your plans, but also how far you can go through knowing your clown… The course has an enrollment fee and places available are limited. Participation in professional training sites on the construction of cardboard masks, leather masks and foam rubber puppets / muppets, is open to everyone, even minors, accompanied by their parents; the masks and artifacts made will be the property of the students / course participants. and a certificate of attendance and attendance will be issued. Participation in the seminar on the figure of the clown is open to everyone, aged 16 or over. The courses have a registration fee and places are limited, however, it is possible to follow the training sites remotely, through webinars on a dedicated platform. The participation and viewing of the theatrical performances is open to all, it is not subject to the payment of a ticket, but in the case of a free offer at the discretion and conscience of the spectator / spectator bystander; however, the seats will be limited. However, it will be possible to follow the vision of some scheduled shows, remotely, and on demand. The participation and viewing of film screenings is instead bound to the purchase of the annual ANCCI (National Association of Italian Cinematographic Circles) card of the REMAKE Popular Cinematographic Cultural Circle, at a symbolic price, in compliance with the SIAE regulations on film clubs. The seats will however be limited.

Participation both as trainees and as spectators/bystanders must comply with the indications of the legislation in force at that time and relating to safety regulations, public distancing and use of protective masks (PPE), in order to avoid any possibility of contagion of pandemic flu. No particular exceptions or concessions will be granted to anyone who does not comply with the aforementioned legislation; to this end, an event order service will kindly notify anyone, even carelessly, who does not comply with this legislation. Throughout the course of the event, a free donation fundraiser will be organized for the Città della Speranza Foundation.

THE PROJECT BORGO PORTEO in COMEDIA

The project foresees, in this second edition of the event, the organization and development of three professional training sites on the construction of cardboard masks, leather and foam rubber puppets, shows, seminars and film screenings, conducted and represented also by artists of international fame, in the setting of the historic Portello Square and other characteristic places of the village (all open air), in Padua. Conceived and organized by our social company laboratory Artaud – theatrical research center, which has been working culturally in the city for more than 25 years, in collaboration with Borgo Porteo Citizen Committee and Remake popular cinematographic cultural circle, Borgo Porteo in Comedia was born with the following motivations and prerequisites:

the condition of the Portello neighborhood, from the time of the health emergency to today, almost deserted, in the absence of university and upper secondary school students and the poor valorisation that has marked, for several years now, the condition of the Portello Square in Padua, devoid of simple activities or even small events, in one of the most historic and ancient neighborhoods of Padua;
the awareness that the skills connected to manual crafts (in this case sculpture / leather processing, construction of masks and puppets, even with poor but no less effective materials) are gradually diminishing;
as well as the knowledge of the techniques and practices of the Commedianti dell’Arte, which in Padua, on the other hand, thanks to the studies of Dr. Ester Cocco who found a document in the Notarial Archives of Padua, proves that a company of comedians was formed in this city since February 1545, with a registered contract (The Theaters of Padua, from its origins to the end of the 19th century, Bruno Brunelli, Angelo Draghi Library, Padua, 1921)
finally, our continuing to believe in the social function of the theater, led us to the idea/proposal, of collaboration with the Città della Speranza Foundation, with the OIC ONLUS Residential Center Nazareth and a possible involvement of the Padua and Venice Prisons, in order to make it possible to participate remotely, through livestreaming, to all those people who, for whatever reason, cannot leave their places of stay, in the short or long term, and therefore to be able to attend, especially at shows that our event will propose, at no cost, for these structures.
